More pain I know, but it will be worth it in the end....

I wish I could write to you all with some news on wins, sadly another week of pain as we fell short.  Seniors and 2nds both going down to St Bernards. So too the Unders, away to St Bedes MT, whilst the 3rds had the bye.  But we can take some positive out of the games knowing we kicked better scores than previous weeks and the signs were there that the boys held strong and rebounded after some poor passages of play.  Apart from a couple of expensive lapses where the opposition took absolute control we were able to play the game on our terms and force opposition errors.

It’s been a fast paced ride for many of the seniors, as reported previously we have lost talent and that combined with injuries to key players has forced the caching staff to turn to the newly graduated U19’s to step up, in all we have debuted 12 players through the seniors with current U19 leader, Angus Archibald the latest to get the call up, he did very well against far more experienced opposition.  Here is the debutant list so far:

  • Will Nichols, Hayden Hrovat and Angus Archibald all still U19.
  • Ben Coull, Harry Hill, Jack Harris, Mitchell Nixon and Tagan Carter-Taylor all U19 in 2015.
  • David Blackie, Tom Chapman, Marcus Cushen and Spencer Cambridge all existing seniors.

In addition to this our 2nds have already used 45 players and we are only 5 games in.  This says a lot about the club, the extent of our injuries and unavailables and the challenges the 2nds have faced with continuity and structures.  This explains in part the 2nds results and the cause of their un competitiveness.

I can see it in the faces of the boys and coaches, the frustration they are experiencing, however you can also see the excitement in the eyes of the debutants and the congratulations they get upon their name being called out at Thursday night selection.  The senior players have been fantastic, it’s a tough time for them too, 12 months ago we were flying, winning well each week and seemingly entrenched in the top 4.  So the senior players they have to adjust and turn their efforts towards mentoring the younger players.  Praise to Joel Rice, Jules Rowe, Ben Smithwick, James Rimington, Cam Jones, Steve Freemantle, Luke Crozier and Sam Cust, great leadership and tremendous loyalty.  So too Lachy Macleod, Jacob Murphy, Morgan Evans, James Gaff, Cam Wallace and Patty Cremean, these boys are improving each week and will form the basis on our next leaders.

Despite the losses enjoy these actions shots of the boys out at the infamous St Bernard’s snake pit last weekend.

Time that I introduced you to our fantastic trainers, an incredible group who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes.  Photo’d below from left to right: Lauren, Grace, Liza, Luke and Bianca, apologies to Geoff our U19 trainer, missing in action!

Looking to this week’s game, time to return home to Carey Bulleen and prepare for SKOB’s.

  • SENIORS       v   St Kevin’s OB, 2.00pm Dunshea Oval, Carey Bulleen
  • 2nd's             v   St Kevin’s OB, 12.00 midday Gramlick Oval, Carey Bulleen
  • 3rd's             v   Monash Blues, 11.40am Bulleen Park Oval 3
  • U19's            v   Parkdale Vultures, 2.15pm Gramlick Oval, Carey Bulleen

It promises to be a massive day at Carey, the school’s winter sports program will be in full swing so it will be busy early.  And as I have already mentioned in past posts, we host SKOBS of the McHarg McKaige memorial trophy, recognising the passing of two former champions from our respective clubs.

Given the significance of the day we have gone all out and have booked the boys from 96.5 INNER FM to call the seniors game.  So please tune in from 1.45pm and listen to Ken Petrucco and his colleagues call our game.  INNER FM do a mighty job promoting the VAFA and with a bit of luck get us a win.

In addition we will be hosting a very important lunch with the focus being on Men’s Health.  We have secured Dr Bernie Crimmins as a special guest; Bernie is brother of the late Peter Crimmins a past Hawthorn FC champion.  Bernie specialises in men’s health and is author of several books including Blokes Health 1 and 2.

Please to report the lunch is a SELL OUT, so make sure you get there early to get a good seat.  Thanks to the SKOB’s crew that will be joining us and we are thrilled to have members from the McHarg and McKaige extended families attend as well.  For the record:
