Historic win for our Women

Unders back on track

Despite the bye round for the senior teams there was plenty of Panther action.  An historic first ever finals appearance for the Women, a must win encounter for the Unders v Blacks and a tough 3rds encounter at home v Monash Blues.  This resulted in 2 wins and a loss.

Women's 1st Semi Final .....WINNERS!!!.

The girls were amazing, I have had the pleasure of seeing them from the opening bounce the last 2 games and what I really notice is how well they team and the great starts they generate, both occasions they had 3 goals on the scoreboard very quickly, that’s proving to be a sizable lead.  Both games were very windy making clean football difficult.  The girls adapted very quickly and were able to still play good football.  Last week Ivanhoe came back at them, despite OC having lead by 4 goals early, Ivanhoe got 3 quick goals and it was game on.  The girls regained control and powered away to go into this week’s Preliminary final against Collegians with Old Camberwell awaiting.  Great praise again to Greg, Em and Kiara.  So too captain Kirra who despite a bad foot injury was giving the girls great encouragement.

So to this week, a late morning encounter with Collegians on the massive Bill Lawry Oval in Northcote.  A win means a spot in the GF, so please make the effort and get to the ground.  These girls have come so far, you will really admire their passion and desire.

The pictures below really depict a great game and how wonderful the girls are travelling, who would have though 9 months ago when this all started with 12 girls that we would have won our way into a preliminary Final, been recognized with a Rising Start nomination and had our girls do exceptionally well in the VAFA's B&F count, have a look here.

Next the unders and 3rds.............

The Unders needed to regroup quickly, with boys overseas it was making selection tough, especially as the school boys were now back at school.  Despite playing the lower placed Uni Blues, it was going to be a tough assignment.  Like Carey, Blues seniors had a bye which meant they would get a couple of their Unders back from the seniors.  The game had to be won to keep us in contention for finals, at half time it was tight, Nick Andrews had announced at selection on Thursday night that this would be his final season as coach.  The boys rallied after an inspiring speech from one of their leaders, Wade Brusnahan, who reminded the boys how much time and effort Nick has put into them and that the boys owed Nick a return of faith.  They played an inspired 2nd half to beat Blues and stay in touch.   Blacks this week another must win.

On the subject of Nick Andrews (pic below).  Nick has done an amazing job, coaching the Unders can be a tough assignment, players hard to commit, travel and other distractions!   On behalf of the club, playing group and the extended community we say a massive thanks to Nick, you have been a wonderful caring coach and we look forward to continuing the relationship in 2018 in some other capacity.

The 3rds went into the game with reasonable expectation having bolstered their squad with some good ins.  Seems Monash was able to do likewise, the scoreboard suggest a one sided game, but it was far from it.  I understand we have provided a game of football for in excess of 100 panthers so far this season.  An amazing stat, we can be proud of this, all the same that many means massive changes in the squad each week which makes the job of coaching all the more difficult.

What's on this  week..............plenty

Certainly is, Panther Women in a Prelim Final, Seniors aiming to continue their surge, 2nds rebound with a win and finals hopes, 3rds redemption and Unders make the move towards a finals spot.

So please no excuses, every the effort especially the Women's final at the Bill Lawry Oval at Northcote Park, followed by a Seniors fix at Brunswick Street or maybe Melbourne Uni for the Unders.

History in the making with our might Women's team.

Morgan Evans: 100 game milestone

Big congratulations to Morgan (Morgs) on his 100 game milestone achievement.  Morgs has been a revelation in 2017, having been a swing man in previous seasons the senior coaches threw Morgs a challenge, a move to the mid field.  Morgs has reveled in the middle using his bigger body and clean hands, its no coincidence that we have settled as a team and now winning more of the ball thanks to Morgans clean possessions and negating play against the opposition's key play makers.  Morgs returned to the OC in 2015 having tried his hand in the VFL at Coburg.  Morgs has quickly established himself as a leading senior player and the team stands taller with Morgs playing especially now as a midfield play maker.   Congratulation Morgs for all at the OC.

See you at the football this weekend
