Goals, goals and more goals..................

Those of you that ventured out to Bulleen last Saturday and watched the senior’s game witnessed a goal feast.  45 goals were kicked, despite the seniors kicking a season high of 14, SKOB’s were brilliant and smashed us by in excess of 100 points, kicking 31 goals!  It’s not often one team kicks a combined 100 points only to beaten by 100 points.  If we go back to the last time we hosted SKOB’s at Carey Bulleen, Premier B 2014, round 7 May 24, was certainly a very different story, OC kicking 26 goals to SKOB’s 11.  A lot has happened since then, we have returned to A grade so too SKOB’s, they went through Premier B in 2015 undefeated and despite an indifferent start so far this season they certainly came to play on the weekend with a start studded ex AFL line up: Gilham, Strauss, Bail, Gysberts  not to mentioned several VFL players on release.  They are the real deal and play Trinity this weekend; this will be a cracking game, especially SKOB’s Steven Salopek plays, the 2002 AFL draft pick #6.

Enough on SKOB’s, we continue to be a “work in progress” team, so far we have played 33 through our seniors, with 3 of them being still Under 19.  It doesn’t help with 18 currently injured, several already season ending.  Regardless the boys are holding up well and are responding positively, so too the coaches.  The 2nds, 3rds and Unders all played well at various stages despite also going down.  I know this all sounds terrible, but we all need to look beyond the results and realise we are in the midst of a generation change, I am certain we will find our level and respond, benefiting from the tough season so far and the experience gained.  SO we need you all to STAY WITH US.

We are all at home for a Carey Bulleen gala; we host both De La in the senior games and Caulfield Grammarians in the Unders.  There will be a reduced number of ASP winter sport games Saturday morning so parking will be much better, canteen trading as usual with the BOS CASTLE array of hot goodies on offer.

  • Seniors v De La: 2.00pm Dunshea
  • 2nds v De La: 11.40am Gramlick
  • 3rds v De La: 11.40am Dunshea (celebrate Matt’s life membership)
  • Unders v Caulfield GFC: 2.00pm Gramlick

Stay in touch with the games, following this link to our website, win, lose or draw we will publish the results and the coaches reports.

One of the shinning lights so far this season has to be the form of Sam Cust; Custy has been our stand out player and has been rewarded with selection in the VAFA rep squad.  Sam has a wealth of football experience, having been a regular in Box Hill’s VFL team.  With mates at Old Carey, Sam together with his mate Michael Thompson signed on at the OC.  Sam has quickly acclimatised and is a key member of our leadership group.  Unfortunately Michael has had a recent recurring hamstring injury, hopefully we can see them both teaming together in the seniors very soon.  Congrats Sam thoroughly deserved BIG V recognition.

Following this link to our website to see who we have had as our luncheon guests over the past 7 years, it’s an impressive list.  The Website will be regularly updated including photos from the lunches.  Surprisingly we are closed this Saturday as we have decided we need to support the players this week so Cookie will focus on the Unders and introduce himself to the parents whilst I will be with the 2nds and seniors.  But we will be open again at our next home game, Round 9, June 4 to Uni Blacks.

Congratulations to Matt Baker from everyone at Old Carey FC on playing 150 games this Saturday.  Matt commenced his playing career in 2005 with the Under 19’s and has also played in the Seniors and Reserves.  Over the past few seasons Matt has been an outstanding player in the Old Carey Club XV111 & Thirds Teams.

Matt has been a great servant to his team mates at the club:

  • Key premiership member of our undefeated 2011 Club XV111 team
  • Twice Best & Fairest Award winner
  • Twice runner up

Possessing enormous skill & courage Matt is a ferocious competitor across Half Back.  Matt has been a magnificent player and contributor at Old Carey FC.  Those that attended the 2011 GF will never forget his hanger, one of the best marks ever seen at the Club.  Congratulations to Matt from all at Old Carey on playing 150 games and qualifying for Life Membership of the Club.

Big thanks to those that attended our lunch last weekend, it was a sell-out.  We hope the males in particular gained some invaluable information from Bernie Crimmins and will take up his challenge to see your Doctor ASAP and regularly thereafter.  Bernie was a delight and made an often difficult topic fun to talk about.

The season continues and after this Saturday we are away for a couple of games, plus there is a bye looming, June 11 Queens Birthday.  I know this will help in giving the players a rest.
