Round 5 News

4 out of 5

Seniors get the job done!

At last our seniors tasted success, despite a low scoring 1st half the boys pulled away from Peninsula to register a 7 goal win.  We did it the hard way, down key personal early in the 2nd half and a limited bench, the boys celebrated the game win a win for Ben Smithwick on his 150th game and the return of club favorite Jarrod Reid.  Jarrod hasn't played since 2015 having suffered a knee injury, he spent 2016 coaching the 2nds and has worked his butt off to get back.  The forward line looks a hole lot better with Jarrod at FF, the boys need to get it to him quickly.

Another great win for the 2nds, Unders and Women's, all 4 at Carey Bulleen.  The 3rds found Old Scotch a bit too good, still they are really having a crack with plenty pushing for spots in the 2nds.

Cookie's kitchen welcomed OC parent Barry Mitchell to the floor, Barry was inspiring with his stories.  He has Will (#42) playing in the seniors so we hope to see more of Barry and a special thanks to the Mums that made the soup, all reports it was very good and a welcome addition to the canteen.

Just wanted to share this picture with you, in a sense you have to feel for the Peninsula 2nds, no one likes to be beaten so badly.  However our 2nds had to endure such beating last season, just goes to show how quickly things can turn.  Massive praise to the 2nds coaches, Sam Hassett and Rob Newton, they are doing an amazing job, 4 wins in a row.

So this week looms as another critical round, Seniors out at Monash to take on the Blues, we cant underestimate these guys, they rolled St Bernard's last week a the snake pit.  I have no doubt the Monash Blues president, Phil De Yong (can you believe that) will be very keen to get the win.  The 2nds will have a tough assignment, so too the 3rds v Monash at 9.30am.  Our Women venture to Oakleigh, home of the Crushers for another tough assignment, whilst the Unders host the under performing Uni Blacks.

So whatever you have planned for Saturday get it done early and get out to Monash, Oakleigh or Bulleen, I know the players will appreciate the support.

The boys made sure Ben Smithwick's 150 finished on a high, getting a  much needed win and allowing Ben to celebrate both this milestone game as well as life membership of the club.  Ben is a great example of a talented footballer who having played in the VFL (Box Hill) resisted the temptation to chase the coin, instead returned to his club and play with his mates.  Ben attitude and commitment to Carey is unquestionable.  He could have very easily chased money, Balwyn FC in particular were very keen to get a hold of Ben.  He declined and returned to Carey and has been rewarded both on and off field by that decision.  Widely respected within the VAFA community as a quality player, Ben has played many  rep games and recently toured Ireland with the VAFA.  The  club is indeed fortunate that Ben returned to OC as it meant his parents, Rob and Jan reconnected  with old friends and have been regulars ever since, helping both on the committee and game day.  So congratulations Ben and a big thanks again for loyalty.

Those that attended last week's lunch were taken on an amazing journey with Barry Mitchell.  Barry spoke both of his life in football and of his personal life, both have had there highs and lows.  Barry is an amazingly positive and funny man, it was a delight having him in the room and Cookie did a great job with his customary Q&A.  Stay tuned for our next lunch and remember to book in early!!
